  Object of all our knowledge here, Our one Desire, and Hope below, Jesus, the Crucified, draw near, And with Thy sad disciples go: Our thoughts and words to Thee are known, We commune of Thyself alone. How can it be, our reason cries, That God should leave His throne above? Is it for man th’Immortal dies? For man, who tramples on His love? For man, who nailed Him to the tree? O Love! O God! He dies for me! Why then, if Thou for me hast died, Dost Thou not yet Thyself impart? His blood, the purchase price lay down, Endure the cross, and claim the crown? Ought not the members all to pass The way their Head had passed before? Thro’ sufferings perfected He was, The garment dipped in blood He wore, That we with Him might die, and rise And bear His nature to the skies!

  Beneath the cross of Jesus I fain would take my stand, The shadow of a mighty rock within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, a rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day. O safe and happy shelter, O refuge tried and sweet, O trysting place where Heaven’s love and Heaven’s justice meet! As to the holy patriarch that wondrous dream was given, So seems my Savior’s cross to me, a ladder up to heaven. There lies beneath its shadow but on the further side The darkness of an awful grave that gapes both deep and wide And there between us stands the cross two arms outstretched to save A watchman set to guard the way from that eternal grave.   One there is, above all others, Well deserves the name of Friend; His is love beyond a brother’s, Costly, free, and knows no end: They who once His kindness prove, Find it everlasting love! Which of all our friends to save us, Could or would have shed their blood? But our Jesus died to have us Reconciled, in Him to God: This was boundless love indeed! Jesus is a Friend in need. Men, when raised to lofty stations, Often know their friends no more; Slight and scorn their poor relations Though they valued them before. But our Savior always owns Those whom He redeemed with groans. When He lived on earth abasèd, Friend of sinners was His name; Now, above all glory raisèd, He rejoices in the same: Still He calls them brethren, friends, And to all their wants attends. Could we bear from one another, What He daily bears from us? Yet this glorious Friend and Brother, Loves us though we treat Him thus: Though for good we render ill, He accounts us brethren still. O for grace our hearts to soften! Teach us, Lord, at length to love; We, alas! forget too often, What a Friend we have above: But when home our souls are brought, We will love Thee as we ought.

  Like the still quiet fall of the silent dew of night On the leaves, that are folded to rest, Is the mercy of God when it droppeth from His throne, Bringing balm from the fields of the blest. Refrain Dew of mercy, dew of mercy, Ever dropping, gently dropping from above; Dew of mercy, how it cheers us, Ever dropping from a Savior’s love! How it cheers and revives every bud of Christian hope! How it takes every sorrow away! O ’tis sweeter by far than the drops of nature’s dew, And it falleth by night and by day.   Ye heav’ns, oh haste your dews to shed, Ye clouds, rain gladness on our head, Thou earth, behold the time of grace, And blossom forth in righteousness! O living Sun, with joy break forth, And pierce the gloomy clefts of earth; Behold, the mountains melt away Like wax beneath Thine ardent ray!
